#EXCLUSIVE!!!!! Author Interview with Samantha Chase and Excerpt from - Love Walks In (The Shaughnessy Brothers Series) Releasing April 5, 2016

Love Walks In (The Shaughnessy Brothers, #2)

The Shaughnessy Brothers are back

He lives by a schedule. Aubrey Burke is on the run from an about-to-be-disastrous mistake when resort owner Hugh Shaughnessy catches her climbing through his office window. Until Aubrey tumbled into his life, Hugh had relied on work and discipline to safeguard a heart damaged by family tragedy. Now his careful world will never be the same.

She lives for the moment. Hugh’s approach to life and love is the opposite of Aubrey’s, but she soon finds herself falling hard for the handsome hotel mogul. There’s a darker reason behind her “live for today” attitude than Hugh could possibly know, but for the first time Aubrey dares to hope this man’s love might make it worth taking a chance on the future.

Chapter 1

It was completely unacceptable. “I don’t think I understand.” Hugh Shaughnessy straightened the cell phone that sat on his desk until it was completely in line with the rest of the items there—all while keeping eye contact with his assistant Dorothy. “I said,” he began slowly, “it isn’t going to work for me. It’s unacceptable. Tell her no. "Dorothy shifted nervously. “Um…I don’t think that’s an option, Hugh. You…you can’t exactly…”She hesitated, clearly trying to choose her words. “What I mean is, I don’t think you get a say in this.” He arched a brow at her. “Really?” “I could see if it was a request for time off or for vacation, but…” “Technically, she is asking for time off,” he said reasonably. “No. What she’s doing is quitting,” Dorothy stated in the same tone. A sigh of frustration escaped before Hugh could stop it. He rose and crossed the office to stare out the open window. “Tell her we require a minimum of two weeks’ notice or else.” “Or else what?” Looking over his shoulder, he replied, “Or there’ll be no letter of recommendation. If anything, I’ll make sure she never works in the industry again.” “Don’t you think it’s a little harsh?” Turning and walking back to his desk, Hugh sat down, clearly restless. “Don’t you think it’s a little harsh for Heather to quit—with no notice—because she fell in love and wants to run off and get married in Vegas?” Dorothy chuckled, quickly stopping when she noticed the glare on her boss’s face. “Personally, I think it’s romantic.” “Vegas? That’s romantic for you? We run some of the most beautiful and romantic resorts in the country—hell, the world!—and you’re choosing Vegas?” he snapped. “Now I didn’t say that, Hugh.” She bristled. “What I said was how I thought the whole thing was romantic—meaning the relationship. Heather and Dave have waited so long for this and with his military service coming to an end, they can finally get married. And they’re going to have a baby and—”“She’s pregnant?” “She really hasn’t told anyone, but clearly you can see why they’re anxious to get married.” Honestly, he didn’t. People had babies all the time without rushing out and getting married. He didn’t agree with it, but that’s the way it was. The fact that his special events coordinator was deserting him on such short notice to do it? Well, it just added fuel to the fire. Folding his arms on the desk, Hugh looked at his assistant pleadingly. “Dorothy, we are getting ready to start a very busy season at our resorts. We’ve got full calendars. And on top of that, you know I’ve been courting a new wine distributor. He’s due here tomorrow. Heather is supposed to sit in on those meetings and come up with a presentation to convince him to do business with us. Can’t you convince her to stay through the end of the month?”“Hugh, you’re not listening. Heather’s gone. She wasn’t giving us a heads-up, she wasn’t giving us an option. She stopped by earlier—with her bags packed, loaded, and waiting in a cab—and said good-bye. She’s probably at the airport right now waiting to board a flight. Face it, we have to come up with a plan B.” “You’ll have to sit in on the meeting and come up with the presentation. You know what we’re looking for. You can just…”“Hold it right there, chief,” she said sternly, holding out a hand to stop him. “That is not going to happen.” “Excuse me?” "There are many things in my job description, but party and event planning isn’t one of them. From everything you’ve told me, this guy is a little high maintenance and demands perfection. My idea of a party consists of inexpensive wine, cheese and crackers, and a deck of cards.” Hugh rolled his eyes. “Dotty…”“I’m serious, Hugh. I’m from another generation. I don’t understand yours. My friends and I enjoy going out for a quiet dinner and then playing mah-jongg. We’re not into music or the latest trends. Trust me, having me work on this would not help you in any way, shape, or form.” Unfortunately, Hugh knew she was right. He just hated being in a jam like this, and having Dorothy’s help would have simplified everything. Scrubbing a weary hand across his face, he looked back at her. “Any suggestions then?” “Off the top of my head? No. But give me a few hours to make some calls and I’ll see what I can do.” “This is a nightmare” he grumbled. Reaching across the desk, Dorothy patted his hand. “It’s definitely not the greatest thing to have happened, but it’s far from the worst. We’ll make it work. We always do. With an encouraging smile, she turned and walked out of the room. With a curse, Hugh reached for the phone and began scrolling through his contacts. Surely he had to know someone who could take over the position on short notice. Hell, right now he’d even consider letting his sister come and do it. Darcy was in her first year of college back in North Carolina and he needed someone right here in California, but maybe she could get school credit for this. While she didn’t technically have any experience, she was young and social and in touch with the latest trends. Hell, her vivacious personality alone would be an asset. “Now I know I’m getting desperate", he muttered. Pulling his eighteen-year-old sister out of school was not the solution to this. Although.....

  Q. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I really fell in love with writing when I was young – like eight years old – but didn’t think about it as a career until I was in high school.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have the courage to try.  So I went to college for marketing/merchandising and just secretly dreamed of being an author.

 Q. How long does it take you to write a book?

When I first started, I was self-publishing a book a month.  The writing process for a novella would take me about three weeks.  Now I’m doing full-length books at ninety-thousand words and I have sixteen weeks to get it done.  Sometimes they are done much sooner and others I am handing it in in the eleventh hour!

 Q. What is your work schedule like when you are writing?

It is very chaotic and all over the place!  I don’t have a formal schedule – I write when inspiration hits.  I sit at my desk a lot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m writing.  I could spend several minutes a day writing or I can spend hours.  It all depends on how the story is flowing.

  Q. Where do you get you're information or idea's for your books?

Inspiration comes from all kinds of places – and rarely the same thing twice.  Sometimes it’s a movie or TV show.  Or a song on the radio or an older song on my iPod.  Sometimes it’s from another book that I’m reading (not my own!) or it will be a news story that I think could play a part in a book…it’s rarely (like almost never) based on anything or anyone I know personally.

  Q. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I am very blessed with a cool life.  And by cool I mean that I am surrounded by some great people that I get to spend time with.  I have a core-group of friends and we make sure we get together several times a month for dinner or lunch.  I make sure that my family sits down to dinner together every night where we can all talk and catch up on each other’s lives.  I love to read, I love to shop (the local Target store LOVES me) and I play way too much computer Solitaire and Scrabble

 Q. Do you have a favourite book that you have written?

It varies, believe it or not.  In the beginning, it was The Christmas Cottage.  Then as time went on it became Stay With Me and then it moved on to I’ll Be There.  But right now?  I’d have to say it’s Always My Girl – which isn’t available until July 2016 so you’ll have to tell me if you agree when it comes out!

  Q. What  were the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Oh my goodness…so many things surprised me!  First it was that I could actually keep coming up with ideas!  I thought I’d run out but they’re still coming – thankfully!  Next it was how mean reviewers can be!  Seriously, I was shocked at how personal some reviews get and how they attack me when they don’t even know me!  I thought reviews were supposed to be about the book but there have been reviewers who made it personal.  It’s pretty devastating.  But on the flipside, I learned how AMAZING readers are!  I have made so many friends and connected with some incredible people through my books that I otherwise would never have met.  Huge blessing!

  Q. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmm…I’m a multitasker.  Seriously, I have to have several things going on at the same time.  Like I’ll be typing, but there’s also a game of Solitaire up on the screen and I’m eating a snack and part of a group text all at the same time.  I feel more creative that way.  UNLESS…I guess this is the quirky part…unless my husband is in the next room with the TV on.  That’s my breaking point.  Then I put on the noise canceling headphones and pop in a sounds of the ocean CD and just write.  And I have no idea why that is.  LOL!

  Q. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I was very into drawing and art and thought I’d go into fashion design.  Which is ironic because most days I’m in jeans and a t-shirt or yoga pants and a cami and barefoot as much as humanly possible.  I’m the least fashionable person I know!

  Q. Do you have any suggestions that might help other authors?

I know I say this a lot but it’s very true – write what you love.  Don’t get sucked into the trends that you see everyone doing.  Your gift – your writing – is unique to you and you should use it write and create something you love.  It will show through in your words.

  Q. What are your current projects? Can you share a little with us?

I am forever busy and I love it.  I am working on finishing up my novella for Erin Nicholas’ Sapphire Falls Kindle World called “Going My Way?” as well as starting up Shaughnessy book #5 which is Owen Shaughnessy’s book.  I’m deep in promotion work for both “Love Walks In” and “Friday Night Brides” too.

 Q. Do you have a favourite book hero from your books or books that you have read?

A favourite from my books?  That would probably be a tie between Quinn Shaughnessy (“Always My Girl”) and Adam Lawrence (“Catering to the CEO”).  Two very different heroes but they left the longest impression on me.  And from other books I’ve read, there is also a tie.  Rafe MacKade from Nora Roberts’ “The Return of Rafe MacKade” and James Paden from Sandra Brown’s “22 Indigo Place”.  Love those men!

List three books you have recently read and would recommend

Ooo…let me see.  “His Every Need” and “His to Keep” by Terri L. Austin.  LOVE those!  And “Pretend You’re Mine” by Lucy Score.

  Q. Do you have anything in particular you would like to say to your readers?
You guys are all AMAZING.  I love that I get to create these books but I love how much you all enjoy them even more.  I have so much fun interacting with all of you on Facebook and at signing and you truly give me great joy.  So…thank you!!!

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan's Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40's to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she's not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.
